Spelling is not.

I like to experiment with genre too, in theory. However in practice, the shorts I've actually made (2), have been a bit odd. I made a great doc before that though.

A lot of genre that I do now is decided by my school.

Pastiche.... that's the word we need here. Pulp Fiction, Evil Dead, Naked Gun, Airplane, Blazing Saddles.... it's all pastiche. Some of them are more fun than others, but they're all essentially generetive. That doesn't mean they're unoriginal... but they're `film for films sake` just like `art for arts sake`.

Personally I can't stand these kind of `clever` films with their film-buff jokes and their post-modern irony... Art which is made from looking at the turd of another man. Though I have to admit they're good for a giggle once in a blue moon.

Art for art sake.. film for film sake... music for music sake... architecture for architecture sake... urrgghh it's all crap, like a dog chasing its own tail.

I wouldn't put Pulp Fiction or even the Evil Dead in the same boat as Naked Gun and Airplane, they are straight slapstick parody. But Pulp Fiction is more 'about something' than just made for distraction in a blue moon. They aren't movies made from other peoples excriment as you so delicately put it, but moreso movies made by people that like movies.

Didn't good ol Tarantino say something about that, like when people ask him if he went to film school, he just says "No, I went to films."

Although i watch all kinds of films from different cultures ,times and genres , hong kong action films hold a special place in my heart, so naturaly the short films i have made so far have been of the martial arts variety with hong kongesqe convetions. I do plan to settle down and do slightly more seirious films one day, but for now , i will be having fun making short `fu flicks.

anyway i believe originality is a hard thing to come by. Once you get it ten seconds later someone else will have that exact same idea.
